It was built by Douglas Aircraft as a replacement for the smaller DC-2. Its 180 MPH cruising speed made it the fastest of its day, and carried eleven more passengers than the Boeing 247. Pilots liked its stability, ease of handling and superior performance. By 1938, 80 percent of all American commercial airline traffic was carried on DC-3 s. Over 60 years later, the DC-3 is still in service as an airliner in many countries. FEATURES: Legendary civilian airliner is made of balsa and has plastic parts. Moveable tail surfaces and aileron. Includes authentic decals for the classic military transport C-47, as well as for the DC-3. May be assembled in bare skeleton framework, tissue-covered, or plastic covered in certain spots. Modelers may choose. Build with landing gear in up or down position. Optional accessory parts included with all the very detailed parts. Display stand for plane may be built, though materials for a stand are not furnished in kit. See display stand procedures in instructions. Tissue paper included to cover balsa frame and become the \"skin\" of the model airplane, if desired. Skeleton and plastic frames also an option. Extremely detailed instructions on various sheets in kit. One large page displays scale views of the actual aircraft, its DC-3 and C-47 history, and minute details and layouts of all the parts and sections of the plane. MARKING OPTIONS: Two decal sheets with markings for two aircraft: 1: Fly - Eastern Air Lines, The Great Silver Fleet, 344, N18124, EAL. 2: N, 315977, L7, Seventh Heaven, U.S. Star Markings. Color Schemes: -DC-3: Silver or polished aluminum, black, flat black, dark blue. -C-47: Olive drab, black, light blue, flat black.
