Um grupo de especialistas analisou os manuscritos do gênio italiano para construir modelos em grande escala dos seus principais inventos. Esses modelos foram apresentados pela primeira vez em 1953. Com base nesses modelos do museu, a Revell lançou esta coleção de kits para montar, de madeira, perfeitamente funcionais e de acordo com os passos dados pelos grupo de peritos há quase sessenta anos. Leonardo and construction site machinery Leonardo’s first encounter with technology and machinery occurred at the construction site for Florence’s cathedral. Between 1469 and 1471, Verrocchio’s entire workshop crew was involved in the project of completing the lantern for the cupola on Santa Maria del Fiore, with the charge of constructing and positioning an enormous copper sphere at a height of over a hundred metres off the ground. The enterprise was a true test bed for numerous pupils, including Leonardo, who had the opportunity to observe and become acquainted with many machines for lifting heavy objects, such as the crane designed by the architect Filippo Brunelleschi. With the construction of the cupola for Santa Maria del Fiore, Brunelleschi succeeded in creating a synthesis of models from antiquity and the tradition of medieval construction. To the field of military engineering belong the numerous occasional bridges—revolving, telescoping, trestlework—that had to be constructible using materials easy to find and transport. Leonardo called these “bridges of happenstance” (ponti di fortuna) or “salvational bridges” (ponti salvatici) because they were, in fact, conceived for the safety of the soldiers. This model represents a swing bridge with parabolic profile constructed over a watercourse. To the left is the end portion of a road constructed on an embankment. The bridge consists of an arched span with parabolic profile. The free end, which is thin and light, rests when the bridge is closed upon a support of trunks on the other bank of the river, where the road begins again. The pivot is connected to two winches positioned at the two sides of the embankment and is also provided with a counterweight container for balancing and facilitating the manoeuvres when the bridge remains suspended in the air, before coming to rest on the other shore.
